This is the privacy policy for shelltools.pro. I’m Graham Watts, and I run the site as an individual. I decide what is collected and why, which makes me the data controller for the information described here.
The short version
- The tools described here are programs you download from GitHub and run yourself. This site does not collect anything about how you use them.
- There are no accounts, forms or comments.
- Two analytics tools, Microsoft Clarity and Google Analytics, are used to see how pages are used.
- Neither sets cookies unless you accept them in the cookie banner.
- If you decline, Google Analytics still sends anonymous page view pings. These include your IP address but no identifier.
- You can change your choice at any time with the Cookie preferences link in the footer.
What is stored on your device
Always, because the site needs it to remember your choices:
cc_cookie: a first-party cookie that stores your cookie choice. It lasts 6 months.theme: an entry in your browser’s local storage that stores your light or dark theme choice. It does not expire, and it is never sent to a server.
Only if you accept analytics:
- Microsoft Clarity sets
_clckand_clskon this site, plus several cookies on Microsoft domains. - Google Analytics sets
_gaand_ga_XC0Y6QDX3Won this site. Both last up to 2 years.
The Cookie preferences dialog lists every cookie with its purpose, including the Microsoft ones not named above.
Analytics
I use analytics to find out which pages are read, which tools get attention, and where the site is confusing. I do not use it to identify individuals, and I do not use it for advertising.
Microsoft Clarity
Clarity records how pages are used: clicks, scrolling, pointer movement, the pages you view, your approximate location, and basic device and browser details. It can replay a visit as an animation of the page. Clarity masks sensitive content by default, and text typed into input boxes is always masked.
If you accept, Clarity links your page views into one session using its cookies. If you decline, it sets no cookies and treats each page view as a separate visit.
Clarity data is kept for the periods Microsoft documents. At the time of writing these are 30 days for session recordings and 9 months for heatmaps and click data. Microsoft does not sell this data. How Microsoft handles it is described in the Microsoft Privacy Statement.
Google Analytics
Google Analytics counts visits and page views. It records the page address, the page you came from, your approximate location, and basic device and browser details.
This site uses Google Consent Mode. By default every Google storage permission is denied. If you accept analytics, only analytics storage is granted. Advertising permissions are never granted, because the site has no advertising features.
If you decline, the Google tag still loads, but it sets no cookies and sends only anonymous pings with no identifier. Google receives your IP address as part of that request, as any web server does.
Google Analytics keeps event data for the retention period set on the property, which is never longer than 14 months. How Google handles it is described in the Google Privacy Policy.
Other requests your browser makes
Release versions. Product pages ask GitHub for the latest release of each tool when the page loads. GitHub receives your IP address for that request. No cookies are set. See the GitHub Privacy Statement.
Hosting. The site is hosted on Azure Static Web Apps. Microsoft serves the pages and may keep standard server logs, which include IP addresses.
Links. Links to other sites, including GitHub, are covered by those sites’ own policies.
Fonts, images and videos are served from this site. They do not contact other companies.
Why this is allowed
Setting analytics cookies, or reading information from your device, needs your consent. That is why Clarity and Google Analytics are switched off for cookies until you accept.
The anonymous pings sent when you decline are based on my legitimate interest in knowing whether the site is being used and whether it is working. You can object to this by contacting me, as described below.
Your choices and rights
You can accept, decline or change your choice at any time with the Cookie preferences link in the footer. Withdrawing consent removes the first-party analytics cookies from this site. Cookies on Microsoft domains can only be removed from your browser settings.
Under UK data protection law you can ask for access to your personal data, ask for it to be corrected or deleted, and object to how it is used.
I have no way to look up an individual in the analytics data, because it is stored against random identifiers and not names or email addresses. If you want to remove your data, the most practical step is to clear your browser’s cookies for this site. Your old identifiers then stop being linked to you, and the data expires on the schedules above.
Your data may be processed outside the UK by Google and Microsoft, under the safeguards in their own terms.
Contact and complaints
To ask a question or exercise a right, open an issue on GitHub. Please do not include personal details in a public issue. Say you’d like a private reply and I’ll arrange one.
If you are unhappy with how I’ve handled your data, you can complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint.
Changes
If the analytics tools or the data collected change, I’ll update this page and its date.
